Sounds of Musical Theatre

TV adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera in development. A new tv adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera is reportedly in development by Gaumont, the French production company behind Netflix shows Narcos and F Is For Family. Novelist and screenwriter Anthony Horowitz (Alex Rider series) has been tasked by Gaumont to reimagine Gaston Lerouxs iconic novel into a six-part miniseries.

Horowitz will reportedly use Lerouxs 1910 gothic novel as the basis for the show, as opposed to Andrew Lloyd Webbers musical version. The classic tale follows a disfigured composer, who lives in the depths of the Paris Opera House, and falls for singer Christine Daae with tragic consequences. Producer Cameron Mackintosh and Andrew Lloyd Webber announced this week the West End production of Phantom would not reopen at her Majestys Theatre in London until next year due to urgent repair work required on the sets, costumes and theatre.

In the same week Andrew Lloyd Webber was forced to address rumours about attempts to scale down the cast and orchestra of the production posting on twitter Please believe me. Im doing everything in my power to ensure that when Phantom returns it is the brilliant original ALW. Ultimately, the power to change the production rests with Cameron Mackintosh and ALWs tweet gently reminded social media of the fact.
