Central Coast Conservatorium of Music

The careful restoration of the old courthouse building at 45 Mann Street is already producing some interesting finds. Heritage consultants to the project, Peter Romey & Mary Knaggs, have been visiting the site regularly while the area over the old cells is being re-roofed by local builders, Buterim LEstrange. It appears the sandstone cells were built both to last and to prevent prisoners escaping with two layers of heavy timber boarding forming the ceilings.

Other finds have included empty beer bottles and cans (left over by a previous roofing gang) and some early documents in fair condition, including early 20thC Police Gazettes. Work continues this week once the rain abates. Who knows what else this wonderful old building will yield? Photos courtesy of Peter Romey.
